Malaysian Dream Girl: Season 2

It is finally back. Are we going to really see a real Malaysian dream girl this time or some girl whose daddy is so rich that he sends thousands of SMSs to vote for his daugther?

The first thing that made me happy about season 2 is the removal of Kenny Sia! I mean the dude was so horny that I felt sorry for the participants. I mean he has probably sexually harrassed them in his mind and has raped them many times. They would probably not mind as it is after all in his mind if the guy is like Brad Pitt or something. But Kenny sia.. I mean let's face it, if he is Brad Pitt, I will be like attracting girls like Austin Power. As he said it himself in his blog "Apparently I topped last season’s complaint list". He probably thought he topped the list due to his self claimed aussie accent, but NO, it is your perversion... Habahaba...

Anyway, enough of Kenny. I saw the first episode and based on the first episode, I can predict that this season will not a be a fair season. I mean one of the participant claimed that she is from South America, but she has a Malaysian birth certificate, Malaysian I.C., Malaysian Father, studied in Malaysia BUT the judges claimed that she is NOT a Malaysian because she does not have a Malaysian passport (Although she has mentioned that she is a Malaysian PR). So now Malaysian PR are not Malaysian citizen and are deemed not good enough to be a Malaysian? Arnold Schwarzenegger was not born in the United States and he became the governor of California. We have this chick, fits the criteria of Malaysian dream girl, and yet these judges said she does not qualify. Since when have they become the immigration officers? Go ahead, pick girls who Don't Lepak and Guai Guai Loi.... yawn...

Doing a PhD and Kenny Sai

PhD

PhD... most people know it stands for Permanent Head Damage.. and for some people, it also stands for Pretty Huge Di*k. I first became interested in doing a PhD after finding myself finishing my Masters at a relatively young age and thought that perhaps having a "Dr." title to my name will help me get chiks easier and what the hell, how hard can a Phd be. Well, I was wrong in two things, as I found that without the "Dr." I can still get chiks (kidding), and I didn't know how damn difficult doing a PhD is.

To be honest, I really didn't expect a PhD to be so difficult. But once I started, I have no choice. There was no u-turn. Damn... I have already spent months doing it... and people already know I was doing a PhD. So even when I thought of quitting, I really had no choice but to go on... sniff sniff... Sometimes I lie on my bed asking myself "Why??? Why the F*ck did I started this crap". Then I started cursing my supervisor in U.K who get my started doing a PhD. I wonder if he felt his ears burning all these while..

I did not expect that while doing a PhD, I had to 1) work 'till mid nights reading stuffs that nobody would 2) reading books with no pictures in it (very unlike me) 3)skipping dinner while having discussions and meetings with supervisors 4) literally have nightmares of failing my PhD 5) read 300++ journal papers for my PhD BUT one thing I can be damn proud of is that although I skipped dinner and TV dramas, I still watch 90% of Man Utd's matches...

I guess If people now ask me for advise on doing a PhD? My answer will be.... DON'T DO IT... However, if you are really determined, then I would say the end results is fantastic. After working my butt off for 3 years plus, it feels really good to finally receive the "Dr." title.

Oh my gosh.. I think I have not been updating this blog for ages... My buddy Jonathan has not been updating the blog as well...arrggghhhhhh

Anyway, normal service will resume. I have been buzy since my last post amending my PhD thesis, submitting the PhD thesis, preparing for viva etc. In case some students wonder why I was nice to them during viva, well, I was afraid of Karma. Bad news is, I have completed my PhD and have officially received my "Dr." title. So those of you who will be doing your viva under me in the future, be prepared for the Simon Cowell of INTI University College! Hahaha...

I remembered very well that during my primary school days, my teacher will read at least one story to us during class time and then she ll tell us the moral of the story. I have heard stories about the shepherd boy who cried wolves, Pinocchio, George Washington cutting down his dad's cherry tree (or was it apple tree?) and so on. The moral of the study was simple. Don't lie!

Heck, some stories were even included in our Moral study text book.

I once heard the phrase "Men of Excellence Lead by Example". Certainly, George Washington was a great man as he showed that he was a man of integrity.
So what about Malaysia? Is our Prime Minister leading by example? Is our prime minister a great man? let's see...

Mahathir Quits UMNO

This comes as a big news to me. As someone in my 20s, Mahathir although is not someone where I agree with most of his policies, he is someone that I have deep respect for. I spent 6 years in Jakarta and whenever I mentioned to people that I am from Malaysia, most of them will mention "Ah, Malaysia? You hava a good leader - Mahathir".

Anyway, will this cause a second wave of change after the election? For me, I just hope for a Malaysia where everyone are treated as equal, and we have a Malaysians' Malaysia. Maybe we need a leader who is capable of leading Malaysia to this.

Broadband in Malaysia is crap!

For years TM has been fooling us by providing us with crap quality Internet access through their “pride and joy”: Streamyx. If you’re not in the IT line, most probably you won’t know that the 1Mbps (1Mbps = 1000Kbps) bandwidth that TM was supposedly providing us only reaches about 300Kbps maximum (only if you’re lucky), that’s a fraction of what you’re suppose to get (1Mbps). If you call TM to ask them about this, they will say: “Best effort only. 1Mb is not guaranteed.” Check the contract that you signed with them when you bought your package, the fine print says “Best effort only”. Do you know that the bandwidth is crap mainly because:

Replace copper wires! We use the public telephone infrastructure (PSTN) which runs on over-head copper wires. These copper wires are prone to outside interference (noise and high temperature) and this affects the transmission of data through these wires. It’s ok for telephone conversation traffic but bad for Internet bandwidth. They need to be replaced with fiber optic cables.

Not enough switch ports! I had a bad experience with TM once, they pulled out my port just to fit someone else’s port because there were not enough ports. The best thing was that the switch box was right outside my apartment room, so I went outside to shout at the TM technicians. They apologized and said that they had to do that because there were not enough ports in the area for new subscribers. I was not the only one that experienced this in my area, a few of my friends get the same problem regularly and since they don’t see the technicians on the spot, they have to call and request customer service to arrange for a technician to come by to fix the problem. TM generates millions in profit but they don’t even want to buy network equipment (routers and switches).

Poor maintenance! If you conduct proper maintenance of the local network infrastructure, there should not be any problems with it. Their technicians should be qualified personnel that know how to handle switches and router and must be good at troubleshooting problems on the spot. I’ve met many TM technicians and most of them don’t know what they are doing, they just refer to manuals or call their helpdesk when they encounter problems. They don’t have network knowledge!

No QC standards! We need quality control. When TM says 1Mbps, they must deliver 1Mbps, not “Best Effort”. The government should take control of the situation and impose a penalty on TM if they don’t achieve the required standard. What is the consumer affairs board doing about this? Why are they keeping quiet?

Today TM told the press that they are planning a RM15.6 billion ringgit bid to improve the country’s broadband penetration rate and infrastructure “to ensure that the country will have a top-notch, competitive high-speed broadband infrastructure in the next decade” (source: http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2008/5/16/nation/21272341&sec=nation).

I believe that its crap, why do they have to implement it within a decade? Why not 4 to 5 years? I believe it is possible if they put some effort into it.

Broadband speed in South Korea is now 1,000 Mbps (that’s more than a 1000 times our current bandwidth here) and it is the same for Hong Kong, with Singapore expected to reach that target by 2015. If Singapore can do it, why can’t we? We have more resources than them but yet we can’t even compete with them? That’s because Singapore cares about their standards. They impose high standards and never lower them no matter what. We should learn from them, especially TM!

Malaysian Football Today... a Humiliation... a Disaster

The Malaysian football team was once respected and highly regarded in the International arena, acknowledged among the best in Asia. But those days are long gone now. You won't see any players like Dollah Salleh, Santokh Singh, Mokhtar Dahari or Soh Chin Aun anymore in the current Malaysian League. Players of their caliber no longer exist in Malaysian football. During their time, Malaysia was ranked among the top 5 teams in Asia and top 50 in the world.

Look at where we are now (FIFA Rankings)... latest ranking seed us at 169 out of 200. St. Kitts and Nevis??? Who are they? But they're higher than us. They're at 156. This is nonsense. Most African countries do not have proper training facilities and coaches but look at them, Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Togo and Senegal proved to be forces to be reckoned with in the past World Cups. Segenal beat France! Malaysia can't even compete with a small island called Singapore! Some of these African nations do not even buy proper equipment like football boots for their players (talking about poor countries like Zimbabwe and Niger) and they still play amazing football. Our Malaysian player only get the best of everything but they produce nothing... why?

Another sad fact about Malaysian football... would you believe that our M-League Football teams who claim to be cash-strapped pay foreign player tonnes of money to play for them. I was reported 2 or 3 years ago that the highest salary for a foreign player in the M-League at that time was RM16,000 per month. The highest paid Malaysian footballer at that time was Indra Putra and he was getting only RM12,000. My point is that if we can't afford such insane salaries, why can't we just use our local players. The most match experience our local players get, the better they get. That's a good way to improve the quality of Malaysian football.

Another amazing fact: The Malaysian national team changes it coach so often that even most of the Malaysian public doesn't know who the current coach is. What I don't get is why doesn't the FA let the coach have at least 2 or 3 years to implement changes to the team, instead of expecting results overnight. When the Malaysia hockey team did so badly last year (i think, can't remember it that well), they disbanded the team, saying that the team didn't deserve to be sponsored by the Government because they did so badly. From what I've seen, the football team did even worse than them but why didn't the government take the same action against them? Because its backed by royalty (head of the FA at that time was the Sultan of Pahang) and politicians (Khairi Jamaluddin is the Vice-President of the FA now)? I believe that sports and politics should not mix at all.

The government says that it will take Malaysia another 20 to 30 years to be good at football and able to compete in the World Cup. I would say that I would never happen as long as the government keeps interfering and players keep getting pampered.

I am a pro Beijing Olympic supporter. After so many years, the game is finally being hosted by China. Although I am not from China, but being a Chinese, I am proud of it. However, what do all these western countries do? They try to ruin the Olympic game by trying to call for a boycott. They claimed that there is no human rights in Tibet. Firstly, what does the game has to do with Olympic? And secondly, to get protests from the Americans and French are an INSULT. Yes, damn insult.

I really would like to congratulate the Kelantan government for being so considerate to the Malaysian citizens. So what’s next? Given that Chow Kit has so many prostitutes and wives and mother of the “regular customers” will be worried of their health and safety, maybe the government should build the biggest free brothel in Malaysia so that these people can show off their skills as well. How about building a club that provide free drugs so that drug addicts can show off how many pills they can pop at one shot?
As long as we legalize all the illegal activities, I am sure Malaysia will have one of the lowest crime rate in the world. Who knows, we can be showcased in Discovery???

Youngest Professor at Age 18

I was watching the news the other day and it was reported that Dr. Alia Sabur will become the youngest professor Konkuk University in Korea (her website: http://www.aliasabur.com/ ) at age 18. Man, can you imagine when you were 18? Hmm, 18 was the age I was worried about who should I bring to prom, what cars should I get, which CDs should I get... but this lady is already working as a professor?? So will she date seniors at the uni who is older than her? Hmmm.. tricky question. If she is like any normal gal, she will have crush on those hot guys in her class. She will have no choice but to give that guy an "A" in her subject. Well, maybe that's why she chose to go to Korea where the guys are not that good looking..well except the one you see on Korean drama but most are not that good looking. I mean when you have famous actors who look like this, what do you think the avg koreans will look like?

Besides, she probably has no chance against the korean girls anway...

Her story reminded me of another guy who graduated with a PhD at age 23 from Wharton Business School and became the youngest assistant professor at Singapore Management Uni with a reported salary of more than USD 100,000 per year. When some of my friends read this news earlier, they told me "He is probably some nerd who can't get chik during school so he put all his energy in studies". Well, from what I read, he is married as well! I even managed to find a pic of him online:

Better than American Idol: Charice Pempengco

I have not been following American idol this season. Frankly speaking, I can't remember the contestents's face, their singing, or their name. I think most people like me only watch American Idol during the first few episodes, where we get to see these:

And don't get me started about Malaysian Idol, Academy Fantasia or those corny Chinese singing competition.

However, I found that there are many talented singers around the world that many people might not have heard of without the Internet. One of them is Charice Pempengco. Check out her video, she really blew Ellen's mind out (Careful Charice, you do know that she is gay don't you):

Bulgarian Idol... shit happens when you listen to a tape recorder over and over again to try to sing an english song although you can't speak english at all. A piece of advice, don't do what this auditioner, Valentina Hasan, did at the Bulgarian Idol competition. She sang Mariah Carrie's Without You but in a weird way and she called it "Ken Lee" (which was acually Can't Live, which wasn't the title of the song). The thing is that history repeated itself, she became as famous as William Hung on YouTube and reached celebrity status in her country. All because she couldn't sing that well.

Later on she was trained to sing the actual song and how to pronounce the words in the lyrics (just like William Hung). She was the invited to sing at the finals and her singing was ok, much improved. Kudos to her for trying. The romour is that she's going to try to sing a Celine Dion song next... damn... there's a limit to my pity ya' know...

Forces working against Arsenal? Too much sense or too much weed???

Recently I watched this clip on YouTube about an Arsenal fan who thinks that there are 'outside forces' who influence his team's games and basically 'make' them lose. I couldn't stop laughing when I was watching because he was talking like he was on drugs... serious weed man... The best part about this is that he was bloody serious about his comments. "Forces working against Arsenal". Perhaps he should stop supporting Arsenal and check himself into rehab.
